A sudden tyre blowout on high-speed expressways such as Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311) or Emirates Road (E611) is one of the most frightening emergencies a driver can experience. The immediate instinct of almost every driver is to slam on the brakes—a natural reflex that is often disastrous.
The Golden Rule: Do NOT Slam the Brakes
When a tyre violently deflates, rolling resistance on that side of the car skyrockets. If you apply hard brake pressure, the vehicle's yaw momentum will violently pivot around the blown tyre, causing an uncontrollable spin or roll. Instead:
- Step on the accelerator briefly (1-2 seconds): This may sound counter-intuitive, but a momentary pulse of power stabilizes the chassis and prevents yaw spin.
- Grip the wheel firmly: Keep the car tracking in a straight line.
- Coast down naturally: Gradually ease off the accelerator and let natural friction slow the vehicle to 50 km/h before applying gentle, progressive braking toward the shoulder.
