Can You Repair a Tyre Sidewall Puncture? Safety Standards Explained

One of the most frequent questions our mobile technicians receive when dispatched to a flat tyre call is: "Can't you just put a rubber plug in the sidewall hole?" While crown punctures are easily and permanently repairable, repairing a puncture in the sidewall or outer shoulder is strictly prohibited under international automotive safety standards.

The Safe Repair Zone vs Non-Repairable Sidewall

Under British Standard BS AU 159 and Middle Eastern automotive regulations, punctures are only repairable within the central minor repair area (the central 60% to 70% of the tread). The outer shoulders and the vertical sidewalls contain high-flex zones where internal cords flex millions of times per hour. Patches cannot adhere safely to these curved flex surfaces.
